A few notes as we get close to starting time...
Registration will be available tomorrow at the starting points in Athens, Winterville and Union Point with SWAG available while supplies last. Online registration is closed.
We'll have mass starts from Union Point at 9 and from Athens at 10, with a "trickle out" start in Winterville around 10. We will have police assistance at two key intersections leaving Athens.
You CAN start riding before the mass start. Be aware that if you start early, your first SAG location may not be ready when you arrive. You can also ride later in the day but please keep in mind that SAG support ends at 5PM.
The weather forecast could be better, but the trend seems to be improving. Unless it's stormy and dangerous, we'll ride through the showers and hope for clearing skies.
The paved route has been marked with orange arrows that stick to the road. These may be damaged by a combination of rain and traffic. Be sure to use a cue sheet and/or download the route to your phone or bike computer. If the road is wet, please do not ride over the arrows so that they will last longer for riders behind you. We strongly recommend you not rely solely on road markings.
Particularly dangerous intersections will be marked with signs, especially the Spring Valley/Winterville Road intersection and the temporary end of the Athens portion of the trail at Hancock Road intersection.
The phone number for SAG support is included on all cue sheets. Be sure to pick one up! Remember that SAG drivers are not patrolling the gravel routes. Gravel riders need to be self-sufficient or part of a self-sufficient group.
Due to the expected rain today and tonight, gravel riders who plan to ride to Crawford should be aware of possible flooding, especially at a creek crossing on Faust Road on the 68-mile route north of Maxeys. If necessary, turn around; don't drown.
There is an error in the Athens cue sheet. The distance from Cherry Street in Maxeys to the Firefly Trail trailhead at Heard Cook Road in Greene County is 5.5 miles, not 7.8 miles. The cumulative distances are correct.
Please join us in welcoming an additional sponsor! Huge thanks to the Oconee Rivers Greenway Commission for continuing their longstanding support of the Firefly Trail as an in-kind sponsor!
Alas, we can't have beer in Dudley Park (not affordably, at least), but Creature Comforts has your back. They are providing tickets for one free pour to any registered rider age 21 or over. Riders can also get a free can or pour courtesy of Oconee Brewing Co., at the Union Point anniversary celebration. You will need your armband and ID.
Coca-Cola of Athens has provided lots of bottled BodyArmor fruit-flavored sports drinks, which we will have available at our SAG stops along with water, bananas and snacks. Coca-Cola's donation included some sugar-free varieties, too.
Be sure to enjoy the music, food, beverages and activities at the Union Point 120th Anniversary Celebration, but riders making the round-trip to Union Point from Athens and Winterville, please keep in mind that SAG support ends at 5 p.m.
Jittery Joe’s hot coffee will be served before the ride in Athens and Winterville. In Athens, United Community Bank will serve muffins and juice while supplies last. We will also have Your Pie personal sized pizzas on sale for only $5 at the Athens finish while supplies last. See the registration table about ordering yours in advance.
Have a fun and safe ride! See you there!
