The segment will begin on East Broad Street at the existing pocket park and continue to Old Winterville Road. ACC expects to buy additional right-of-way out to Winterville Road for future development. The first segment will provide a direct link from downtown Athens to Dudley Park and beyond using a multi-million dollar bridge to be built over the North Oconee River and Wilkerson Street on existing railroad piers. An additional bridge will be set over Poplar Street. For the time being, the Firefly Trail will cross Trail Creek on the North Oconee River Greenway bridge.
The Firefly Trail is a community-driven rail-trail in progress. When complete, it will stretch about 39 miles between Union Point and Athens, Ga., connecting three counties and seven towns with a wide, paved, off-road path for walking, running, cycling and rolling that celebrates the historic corridor of the Georgia Railroad Athens Branch, the state’s first chartered railroad.
Athens-Clarke County expects to begin construction in 2015 on approximately one mile of the trail, funded primarily by SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) revenues, and with additional funding from federal sources.
